Our organically crafted Tonka Bean Absolute is obtained from the seeds (or 'beans') of the fruit of the Dipteryx odorata, also known as Cumaru or Kumaru, a large tropical tree native to Central and South America. With its profound, caramel-like, powdery-sweet aroma, Tonka Bean Absolute Oil is one of the finest perfume ingredients for fixation of natural perfumes. The profile is reminiscent of Caramel, Almond and Vanilla.

From February to April, the ripened Dipteryx odorata fruit falls from the trees. Once the fruit is gathered, the hard outer shell is removed and the beans are collected. These black, wrinkled beans then spread out to dry for several days before being used to extract the absolute. We source Tonka beans from Brazil and have created partnerships with local Amazonian communities and NGO's to ensure sustainability.

The Tonka bean contains Coumarin, a compound first isolated from this plant, and named for it. Coumarin is responsible for the pleasant odor of beans, which led the perfume industry to label these extracts in the Gourmand family.

REPORTED BENEFITS AND USES

Tonka Bean Absolute is a great fixative and non-floral alternative for introducing warm notes in chypres, fougeres, new mown hay bases, Oriental bases, Lavender bouquets, etc.

Apart from its use in high class natural perfumery, Tonka Bean Absolute is also known for its antiseptic properties, expectorant effects (anti-spasmodic), use as a natural insecticide, and even an anti-coagulant. Its highly intriguing and delightful scent makes it a wonderful natural fragrance to add to decadent soaps, lotions, bath bombs and candles.

In aromatherapy, the scent of Tonka Bean is warm and summery and can be used to create an atmosphere that brings a sense of calm, encourages relaxation and promotes a healthy sleep cycle. It is also considered to contain aphrodisiac properties and is used to heighten the sexual excitement.
